Product Description
The La Crosse Technology BC700 Alpha Power Battery Charger has four modes and charges all NiCd and NiMH AA and AAA rechargeable batteries. The four modes include charge, discharge (discharges the batteries and then recharges them), recharge (discharges and recharges up to 20 times to bring old batteries back to life) and test (displays the battery capacity). BC-700 Battery Charger " Features: • All modes automatically default to 200 mA charge on the BC-700 Battery charger • Charge both AA and AAA rechargeable batteries simultaneously and will charge all Low-Discharge batteries. Sanyo Eneloop, Uniross Hybrio, Nexcell EnergyOn, Accupower Acculoop and other future low discharge batteries. • Hhas Four independent channels - Charges 1, 2, 3 , or 4 rechargeable batteries at a time. • Overheat detection to protect over-charging and LCD shows capacity for each battery when charging is complete • Charge Mode - allows a range of user selectable milliamp settings from 200 to 700 for faster charging times. Within 4 seconds after rechargeable batteries are inserted charging automatically begins at 200mA, or you may select 500, or 700mA charge rates for faster charging times. • Discharge Mode - reduces memory effect by discharging rechargeable battery completely before recharging to full capacity. User selectable. • Refresh Mode - discharges and recharges up to 20 cycles or until rechargeable battery is refreshed to full capacity. User Selectable. • Test Mode- First charges the rechargeable battery to full capacity, then discharges completely to measure rechargeable battery capacity for display in mAh or Ah, and then recharges each rechargeable battery to full battery capacity. • UL approved, BC 700 charger also has safeguards that sense rechargeable battery polarity, rechargeable battery temperature and defective rechargeable batteries. • World Voltage capable - Operates on 100~240V AC Input.

Best budget charger
You get a lot more with this charger than you do with any "bundled" charger you get at the supermarket. It charges batteries independently, has in informational display, and provides Discharge, Test and Refresh functions.

I have used it to revive batteries that seemed dead. The Test function is really useful, too. It will actually tell you the capacity of each battery in mA when it is done.

Some say the default 200 mA charging current is too low (the theory is that chargers have a hard time detecting terminal voltage at this level, meaning they cannot detect when there is a full charge.) But I have found it does a fine job charging 2700mA batteries at 200mA, and have not bothered to set a higher current. It does take a long time at the 200mA rate, but the batteries don't get hot.

Could I squeeze out more capacity using a charger that could output 1 amp or more? Maybe. But this thing is only $30 bucks, and it does not get hot.

If you want to spend more, the BC-9009 is an option, as is the Maha C-9000. But I find this one perfect for my needs.

The difference between this and its "big brother" the BC-9009 is that (1) it only goes up to 700mA and (2) it does not have a history of catching fire.

Why not 5 stars? The UI is a little confusing, and I would like an AC adapter that does not block other sockets.

La Crosse Technology BC-700 Alpha Power Battery Charger
Best charger I owned! Brought back to life "dead" batteries that other charges gave up. Recommended it to friends at work and they are happy too with this charger. I use it regularly to recharge AA and AAA cells from various manufacturers. I use discharge/charge mode and charge/test mode often. Left the charger on overnight and it doesn't overheat or fry batteries. It changes to trickle charge as soon as charging is completed. Love it!

Great except for the plug
This is the best charger I have owned the display is excellent you can see if your batteries are charging to capacity or not, it charges the batteries fairly slowly which as other reviewers have pointed out, is a good thing as it reduces the amount of heat generated, thereby increasing the life of the batteries.

I only have one gripe about this product, the picture shows a nice compact looking charger, what they don't show is the bulky power plug which contains the transformer.

I wish they would incorporate the transformer in the charger itself, the bulky plug means it is awkward to find a place to plug it in. It wont fit in the average 6 way properly as the bulky part of the plug will cover up the neighboring sockets, and if used in the upper outlet of a double wall socket it will cover up the lower one.
I have owned other products with this "transformer in the plug" arrangement and I have never liked it.
I can see the point of it in an item which can be battery operated like for instance a laptop computer, as if the transformer is in the power plug you gain a lighter and smaller, more portable product while using it on battery power, but I dont see the point of this in a charger that must be used on mains power all the time.

I would much rather the transformer be built into the charger to save space around my already over crowded power outlets.

Battery reviver
This thing has almost paid for itself already and made rechargeables highly valuable again. I have a dozen or so old NiMh batteries that would not last long on a charge.
I put them in this and used refresh mode and all but two were restored to near-original capacity. It takes a few days, but refresh mode is worth it.
I was having to change out the batteries from my wireless mouse and xbox 360 controller every other day, now it's been a few weeks and the controller batteries are still 3/4 full.
The only problem I have with it is there's a 8 second time limit to choose the mode after you put in a battery, Just seems like an odd design, but it still works great!

The BEST AA recharging unit out there!
An earlier reviewer mentioned that this will "only" charge up to a rate of 700Ma. For those of you who might be uninformed about "rapid" charging units, 700 Milliamp rate is more than adequate, unless you need your batteries immediately, if not sooner!! I charge my Eneloop batteries at a rate of ONLY 200 ma. Yes, it does take over 10 hours at times (when the batteries are near totally depleated), but your batteries will last more than twice as long (before throwing them away) if you charge at the lowest rate possible!! Really quick charging rates are good in their place, but if you use rechargable batteries on a nearly daily basis like I do, using a high recharging rate will make your batteries VERY hot, thus damaging them much sooner! My solution? I have 16 AA Eneloop rechargable batteries and TWO Nikon EN-El3e camera batteries that I use for my big photo trips (going to Italy next week for 9 days). My Nikon D700 takes one Nikon EN-EL3E battery inside the camera and 8 AA batteries for the MB-D10 battert pack/grip attached to the bottom of the camera. Since I shoot in full adobe RGB mode with 14 bit raw uncompressed color format, my setup uses a fair amount of battery power! When "in the field" I carry one spare EN-EL3e battery and 8 spare Eneloop AA batteries. Most of the time the FRESHLY recharged batteries in the grip and camera body will carry me through an entire day of shooting, but not always (that's why I carry spares!). When I get back to my hotel room, I IMMEDIATELY place my used batteries on the two battery chargers (including the one specifically for my Nikon battery). So when I go out the next day, I'm "loaded for bear" again! My Nikon SB900 flash also takes 4 additional batteries, when I bring it (I will this trip!). I think this is the finest charger out there for thos who don't want to have to replace their rechargable batteries every year! I LOVE the features! You won't go wrong with this charger!!
